Matthew Barber’s Enchanted April, based on Elizabeth Von Arnim’s beloved novel of the 1920s, is a gentle and romantic comedy of manners. Against the backdrop of a country still reeling from World War I, Enchanted April offers to its characters, and viewers, a necessary balm of sunshine and renewal. Lotty Wilton and Rose Arnott, both unhappy in their marriages, make a daring plan: they will rent a small Italian castle for the month of April. In order to reduce costs, they are joined by two other ladies in need of an escape – the beautiful Lady Caroline and the overbearing Mrs Graves. Although tensions flare at first, as the sun-drenched days go by, San Salvatore works its magic on each sad and hardened heart, helping to break down social barriers and forge new friendships.
